Clinical Research Methods Course

Cost for Course: $30.00
Register here

This one day course is designed to introduce the participant to fundamental concepts of clinical research and trial design. It has been developed using structures from the American College of Surgeons Clinical Trial Methods Course and American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Clinical Trial Methods Course. Sessions are designed to be dynamic and interactive. After the didactic introduction, course faculty will work through the specific steps in developing a human clinical trial and will encourage audience interaction. The didactic sessions will cover the essential elements of statistical design and analysis in clinical research. Course faculty has been selected by virtue of their extensive experience in clinical research leading multiple large, multicenter trials and a long history of teaching these techniques to clinicians both nationally and internationally.

On the final session of the course with faculty support, participants have the opportunity to form groups and work through the design of a clinical trial of their own.

Course Objectives:
At the completion of this course, it is expected that the participant will:

  1. Understand the essential elements of a well designed clinical trial
  2. Have a working knowledge of biostatistics as it applies to design and interpretation of clinical research
  3. Understand and identify errors in design and interpretation of clinical research and apply this knowledge to their own review of the surgical literature
  4. Acquire the skills to set up and oversee the implementation of a simple prospective clinical trial
  5. Have interacted with peer surgeons and established contacts for potential international clinical trials.

Humanitarian Symposium
Multifaceted Approach to Humanitarian Surgical Outreach and Capacity Building in Low and Middle Income Countries

The development and standardization of best practices that focus on the highest quality of care, efficiency, cost effectiveness and optimal delivery will drive better outcomes and expand care to far more individuals in need around the world. Surgical voluntarism missions are safe and valuable in lessening the burden of surgical disease globally when performed in an organized fashion and with continuity of care-related outcomes during volunteer missions subjected to the same quality assessment as other core medical treatments including consent, checklists and universal protocols.

Speakers representing Smile Train, Operation Smile, Smile Bangladesh and others will present their models for addressing the quality of perioperative care of the cleft/craniofacial patients.

In addition, presentations and discussion will focus on the how to make orthognathic surgery available and feasible in the cleft/craniofacial populations in LMIC.

Moderators:
Dr. David Hoffman
Dr. Steven Roser
Dr. Shahid Aziz

Speakers:
Dianne Erquiaga, MS, Program Director, South America, Smile Train
Mariane Goes, Area Director for South America, Smile Train
